Job Description
The role involves overseeing the daily operations of the Radiation Therapy department, ensuring that all teams and services follow established rules and procedures. It includes providing professional leadership, setting an example for staff, contributing to the department’s strategic planning, supporting service development, and monitoring both team and individual performance. The position also works with the team to ensure services are delivered efficiently and effectively.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensures patient confidentiality is maintained across all systems and processes, including digital platforms.
- Assists the Radiotherapy Manager with staff allocation, rotations, and activity planning.
- Supports staff appraisals in line with hospital policies.
- Coordinates and supervises treatment planning, working closely with Radiotherapy and Radiation Physics teams.
- Collaborates with Consultant Oncologists, Radiographers, and Medical Physicists to implement new radiotherapy techniques.
- Supports professional behavior and high standards among staff.
- Oversees administrative duties, including audits, KPIs, and departmental reporting.
- Participates in Aria and Eclipse administration as needed.
- Leads incident reporting processes when designated, providing guidance and solutions.
- Identifies problems, recommends solutions, and seeks assistance when necessary, understanding the impact of decisions.
- Manages daily operations of the treatment planning section, ensuring timely production and delivery of radiotherapy plans for routine and complex cases.
- Plans treatments for patients using external beam photons or electrons, applying both manual and computerized methods.
- Prepares patients for radiotherapy according to Clinical Oncologists’ requirements, including CT planning and dose distribution calculations.
- Reviews and adjusts treatment plans as patient conditions change, ensuring adherence to departmental protocols and international standards.
- Supervises and develops staff, providing technical guidance and acting as a role model.
- Identifies and contours critical organs-at-risk on planning images, coordinating with diagnostics for image fusion.
- Checks and re-plans patient treatments when necessary, reprioritizing workloads efficiently.
- Provides advice to junior staff on treatment feasibility and ethical decision-making in patient care.
- Oversees production of immobilization devices and accessories for patient positioning and tissue shielding.
- Participates in advanced practice technique implementation.
- Maintains high standards of patient care, communication, and confidentiality.
- Supports dosimetry and quality control programs for planning systems, treatment machines, and CT.
- Reports equipment defects, accidents, or complaints promptly in line with health and safety policies.
- Responds to emergencies and supports treatment delivery during unplanned downtime or increased service demand.
- Completes administrative duties relevant to the service as needed.
- Leads orientation and training for new staff in pretreatment and ongoing staff development.
- Maintains expert-level clinical practice and shares knowledge within the department.
- Mentors junior staff to ensure compliance with policies, QA protocols, and evidence-based practices.
- Assesses and evaluates team performance, providing continuous teaching and training to maintain and develop competencies.
Skill & Experience
- Minimum of 6 years’ experience as a Radiation Therapy Technologist
- At least 2 years’ experience as a Radiotherapy planner/dosimetrist
- For UAE Nationals: Minimum 3 years’ experience in an acute care hospital and at least 1 year in a managerial, supervisory, or equivalent role
- Proficiency with computerized treatment planning systems
- Minimum 2 years of clinical computer planning experience, including 3D, IMRT, and VMAT techniques
- Experience with advanced techniques such as SRS, SBRT, and Adaptive Planning
- Bachelor’s degree in Radiotherapy from an accredited college or university
- Valid license to practice in the home or practicing country
- License from one of the following authorities: Department of Health (DOH) Abu Dhabi, Dubai Health Authority, Ministry of Health, United Arab Emirates
- Postgraduate education in a relevant field
