Job Description

A Genetic Counsellor supports patients and families by explaining genetic conditions, test results, and possible health risks in a clear and sensitive way. The role includes collecting family histories, assessing inherited risk, coordinating genetic testing, and helping patients understand their options. The counsellor works closely with doctors to support informed decision-making and patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gather detailed medical, genetic, family, and social history from patients and their relatives.
  • Assess genetic risk for patients and family members and explain the possible outcomes and choices in a clear way.
  • Request and coordinate genetic tests and related investigations in consultation with physicians when required.
  • Combine test results with clinical and family information to form accurate risk evaluations.
  • Explain test results, health impact, and emotional concerns in a supportive and respectful manner.
  • Guide patients toward suitable medical, financial, educational, and emotional support services.
  • Take part in research activities related to genetic counseling.
  • Contribute to the development of policies and clinical guidelines.
  • Provide supervision and teaching to students and trainees.
  • Keep knowledge current through continuing education and professional certification.
  • Participate in audits and follow healthcare regulatory requirements.
  • Act professionally and represent the organization positively.
  • Adapt to different clinical and community settings as required.
  • Serve as a resource for healthcare professionals and the public on genetic health matters.

Skill & Experience

  • Master of Science in Genetic Counselling or an equivalent qualification.
  • Strong subject knowledge to provide reliable guidance and support to healthcare professionals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High level of interpersonal skills and professional conduct.
  • Two to four years of relevant experience in a similar or related role.
