Job Description

The Consultant Physician is a senior doctor responsible for delivering safe, thorough, and evidence-based care within their specialty. The role includes supervising and training junior doctors, supporting clinical governance activities, and taking part in service improvement work. The consultant provides care for both inpatients and outpatients, participates in the on-call schedule, and ensures all practice follows Department of Health regulations and SEHA Hospital policies in Abu Dhabi.

Key Responsibilities

  • Examine patients, take detailed medical histories, order and review investigations, prescribe treatments, and create clear care plans for both inpatients and outpatients. Lead ward rounds and monitor patient progress regularly.
  • Deliver safe, high-quality, evidence-based care within the specialty, ensuring accurate diagnosis and effective treatment for all patients.
  • Supervise and support junior medical staff, including specialists, GPs, and residents, providing guidance, instruction, and feedback.
  • Work closely with other specialties and support services, attending multidisciplinary meetings to ensure coordinated and complete patient care.
  • Participate in the on-call schedule, providing coverage during evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Keep accurate, clear, and timely medical records, and follow all hospital, departmental, and Department of Health policies, including infection control and patient safety standards.
  • Take part in clinical audits, peer review, and risk management activities to help improve patient care and clinical outcomes.
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients and their families, explaining treatments and procedures, and ensuring informed consent is obtained.

Skill & Experience

  • Hold an MBBS or an equivalent medical degree from a recognized medical school.
  • Complete a structured specialty training program with certification from a DOH-approved Tier 1 or Tier 2 country, such as North American/European Board Certification or Fellowship of a Royal College.
  • Possess a postgraduate qualification, such as MD, MS, or DNB, in most cases.
  • Have 3–7 years of post-specialty clinical experience in a recognized multidisciplinary setting, depending on the qualification and tier level.
  • Any gap in clinical practice longer than two years requires approval from the Department of Health or completion of a return-to-practice program.
  • Be eligible for, or hold, a valid Department of Health Abu Dhabi medical license.
  • Complete Primary Source Verification (PSV) of all educational and professional documents through the Data Flow Group.
  • Pass the DOH licensing exam unless exempted based on Tier 1 qualifications or experience.
  • Provide a valid certificate of good standing from the current or previous licensing authority.
  • Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills, leadership ability, problem-solving skills, and commitment to continuing medical education (CME/CPD).
  • Be fluent in English and Arabic; knowledge of other languages is an added advantage.
