Job Description
The Consultant Physician is a senior medical specialist responsible for delivering high-quality, evidence-based care within their field. The role includes overseeing patient management in both inpatient and outpatient settings, guiding junior doctors, and contributing to clinical audits and service improvement activities. The consultant takes part in on-call duties and ensures all medical practice follows Department of Health requirements and SEHA Hospital policies in Abu Dhabi. Patient safety, professionalism, and consistent clinical standards are central to this position.
Key Responsibilities
- Examine patients, obtain full medical histories, request and review investigations, prescribe appropriate treatments, and create clear care plans for both inpatient and outpatient cases. Lead regular ward rounds and follow patient progress closely.
- Deliver and oversee safe, high-quality, evidence-based care within the specialty, ensuring accurate diagnosis and effective treatment for all patients.
- Guide and supervise specialists, GPs, and residents, providing ongoing clinical support, feedback, and training.
- Take part in the on-call rota, providing medical cover during evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays as required.
- Work closely with other departments and allied health professionals, and attend multidisciplinary meetings to support complete patient care.
- Maintain clear and timely medical documentation and follow all hospital, departmental, and Department of Health policies, including infection control and patient safety standards.
- Take part in audits, peer reviews, and risk management activities to improve clinical performance and patient outcomes.
- Explain medical conditions, treatment options, and procedures to patients and families in a clear and respectful manner, and ensure informed consent is properly obtained.
Skill & Experience
- Hold an MBBS or equivalent degree from a recognized medical school.
- Have completed an approved specialty training program with certification from a DOH-approved Tier 1 or Tier 2 country (such as Board certification, Royal College fellowship, or equivalent).
- Possess a postgraduate qualification such as MD, MS, or DNB.
- Have at least 3–7 years of clinical experience after specialty training in a recognized healthcare setting.
- Any clinical gap longer than two years must be approved by the Department of Health or supported by a return-to-practice program.
- Be eligible for, or hold, a valid Department of Health Abu Dhabi medical license.
- Complete Primary Source Verification of all qualifications through Data Flow.
- Pass the DOH licensing examination unless officially exempt.
- Provide a valid certificate of good standing from the current or previous licensing authority.
- Demonstrate strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills, with commitment to continuing professional development.
- Be fluent in English and Arabic; knowledge of additional languages is an advantage.
