Job Description

The Staff Midwife (SM) is responsible for coordinating care for mothers and newborns, providing direct patient care, education, and supporting smooth transitions throughout the care process. The role involves delivering antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care in line with the Midwifery Scope of Practice set by the regulatory body. The SM works across different care settings to meet the needs of patients and families, upholding professional midwifery standards while promoting the mission, vision, and values of SSMC. The SM is also expected to follow and uphold the Professional Midwives Code of Conduct for Abu Dhabi and the UAE.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collects and analyzes assessment data to determine diagnoses and identify patient needs.
  • Assesses physical, psychosocial, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual needs, including antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care for normal pregnancy, recognizing complications and taking appropriate actions.
  • Uses evidence-based assessment tools and validates findings with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
  • Prioritizes patient information based on immediate needs, risks, or barriers to health and safety.
  • Documents all assessment data accurately and according to guidelines.
  • Involves patients, families, and healthcare team members in creating individualized care plans and measurable outcomes.
  • Monitors changes in patient conditions and initiates appropriate actions, reporting to supervisors or physicians as needed.
  • Adjusts care plans based on ongoing assessments and patient responses.
  • Implements care plans in collaboration with patients, families, and healthcare teams, using evidence-based interventions.
  • Performs treatments and procedures following established protocols and administers medications according to policies.
  • Ensures all care plan components and modifications are documented in patient records.
  • Communicates relevant information across all levels of care to support patient safety and care continuity.
  • Provides comprehensive handovers and updates healthcare providers on patient condition changes.
  • Stays current with evidence-based practices and integrates research findings into care.
  • Supervises junior staff, student midwives, and practical nurses to ensure safe and effective care delivery.
  • Maintains professional and therapeutic relationships with patients and families, assisting them in self-advocacy.
  • Questions unsafe practices and reports illegal or incompetent actions per organizational policy.
  • Continuously evaluates own midwifery practice against professional standards and regulations.
  • Considers effectiveness, cost, environmental health, and organizational impact in practice decisions.
  • Uses current resources, policies, and electronic systems for care documentation and information retrieval.
  • Promotes a safe work environment and communicates environmental health risks to staff, patients, and families.

Skill & Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Midwife in a maternity hospital or relevant clinical setting.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Midwifery or equivalent (minimum 3 years course duration), OR
  • BSc in Nursing (minimum 3 years) with a Midwifery Certificate (minimum 1 year), OR
  • Associate degree in Nursing from Canada or USA (minimum 2 years), successful completion of the National exam, and Midwifery Certificate (minimum 1 year).
  • Valid/current national license.
  • BLS certification.
  • ALSO (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics) and NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) relevant to the specialty.
