Job Description
The Consultant Physician leads and oversees the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care, ensuring accurate diagnosis, management, and treatment of all patients under their care. The role serves as a model of clinical excellence within the specialty and includes providing leadership, guidance, and training to junior medical staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Supports and follows all hospital, departmental, and divisional policies, procedures, and initiatives.
- Helps implement the organization’s performance management system, including peer review and productivity/utilization reviews.
- Assists with scheduling and ensures adequate medical coverage within the Division at all times.
- Attends divisional meetings as required.
- Supports recruitment of new medical staff when appropriate.
- Performs administrative or clinical duties as requested by the Division Chief.
- Diagnoses and treats patients according to best-practice standards within the specialty.
- Oversees junior medical staff and assumes responsibility for the care they provide.
- Complies with hospital policies regarding admissions, consultations, daily patient care, surgeries, discharge, outpatient, and follow-up procedures.
- Practices appropriate use of organizational resources.
- Leads ward rounds and regularly reassesses both inpatients and outpatients in line with best practices.
- Accurately documents all relevant clinical information clearly and in a timely manner.
- Regularly reviews investigation results and adjusts treatment plans as needed.
- Collaborates with other medical specialties and support services for additional input when required.
- Participates in multi-disciplinary meetings to plan safe, effective, and holistic patient care.
- Prepares patients for procedures, including obtaining informed consent.
- Accepts clinically appropriate referrals from the Emergency Department, primary care, specialty clinics, walk-ins, and other hospitals.
- Provides on-call coverage on a rotational basis, including evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays.
- Communicates clinical information to patients and their families in a timely and clear manner, with patient consent.
- Maintains positive working relationships with staff and promotes a team-based approach to care.
- Performs other clinical duties as assigned.
- Leads and supports quality improvement initiatives within the Department.
- Encourages regular audits and uses results to enhance clinical practice.
- Supports reporting, investigation, and resolution of incidents.
- Promotes continuous learning and development by supervising and guiding junior medical staff.
- Facilitates essential training for clinical staff in the specialty.
- Demonstrates commitment to Continued Medical Education (CME).
- Participates in clinical research and publications.
- Stays updated on current literature, trends, and advancements in the specialty.
Skill & Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience as a Consultant or equivalent post board certification
- Minimum of 8 years of full-time experience as a Consultant or equivalent post board certification, including fellowship training, at an internationally accredited institute
- Clinical fellowship training following primary specialty board may substitute for experience
- Each year of clinical fellowship counts as two years of clinical experience
- Applicable only to clinical subspecialty fellowships completed in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK, USA, or HAAD-accredited fellowship programs
